Choosing the Correct Stones for a Hot-Stone Massage

When you enjoy a hot-stone massage, you're taking advantage of a therapy that Native Americans have used since ancient times. However, care must be taken when choosing the stones to be used.

Basalt is the natural choice because it contains magnetic or titanic iron that helps retain heat. Teri Green of Evergreen Massage Therapy in Covington, Washington, believes it's essential to use natural stones, not artificially made ones. "One of the goals of hot-stone therapy is to reconnect with the earth and its energy," she says. "Natural stones aid in that process because they come from the earth. They don't if they're manmade." Teri hand-selects round and oval-shaped basalt stones from the ocean beach where waves have worn the stones smooth. They appear gray or greenish when dry and turn black when wet.

During a massage, the therapist positions warmed stones at strategic points on the client's body to aid in the feeling of comfort and relaxation. Then the stones are oiled and used in applying massage strokes.

Hot-stone massage particularly effective for those who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter touch. The stones' heat helps muscles relax more quickly so the therapist doesn't need to apply deep pressure in order to work the muscles. Warmth also improves circulation, calms the nervous system, and creates a memorable massage experience.
